Aster

1991· 1h 30m· Amharic

The film takes place over the course of a single evening. At her wedding anniversary dinner party, the protagonist, Aster, opens up and reveals her life story to a close friend. The movie shifts back and forth between the present-day dinner party and a sequence of emotional flashbacks detailing Aster's past. A central theme of the plot is class tension. Aster comes from a very humble background, whereas her husband is a doctor from a prominent, wealthy family. This stark economic and social divide places immense pressure on their relationship. The plot follows the decay of their marriage as Aster navigates the rigid societal expectations of the era, trying to balance traditional Ethiopian customs with the realities of modern, upper-class expectations.
